What Kind of Glass Should You Use?

There have been so many wonderful advances in the glass industry; we now have many choices.  However, we have found in the picture framing industry that our choices depend very much on our knowledge.  The reason we use glass on a picture is mainly for protection from the many things that could harm the framed work, such as punctures, soiling from touching or airborne impurities.  That being said, we must now understand the different types of glass.  Regular glass is simply the smooth glass we are all accustomed to and, with inexpensive framed items, it is quite adequate.  Non-glare glass has one or both sides etched, or roughed-up, so that the glass does not as easily reflect light.  This glass is useful on pictures that are located near a window or lighting that reflects on the picture, making the picture difficult to see and enjoy.  UV glass has a special coating that blocks a portion of the ultra-violet light that comes from artificial lighting and sunlight.

Now, to confuse things, mix them up.  Regular with UV,  non-glare with UV.  Your choices will depend on your specific needs.  At Linda’s Frame Shop we will help you protect your treasures with the right glass.
